For what it is worth, I agree with you Mary.
If you have it on in Safari settings, and find a page in't working right, you 
can go to that format button and there is a hide reader view button.
But, it was easier the old way.
Maybe if enough people write Apple and request it, we could have a Reader 
button and a format button.

and shouldn’t be a reader mode option. Sometimes, I think they make things more 
complicated than they need to be.
