I don't use it myself, but Google Photos does allow for free and unlimited storage of photos. To get the unlimited storage, you do have to use Google's compression and restrict your photos to high resolution. https://www.google.com/photos/about/

Google gives you 15G of free storage across Drive, Gmail, Photos and so on. To get more it costs $1.99 for 100G. https://www.businessinsider.com/how-does-google-photos-work

And if you're worried about getting what you pay for, Google Photos is consistently reviewed as one of the best photo storage apps out there, and here's just one example https://expertphotography.com/best-photo-storage-app/

I think Google or Amazon offers a lot of free space for photo storage.
Personally I consider the cost for Apple's 50Gb of iCloud storage so small, 99
Cents a month in the US I think, that both my wife and I have it and this way
we don't have to worry. If you take tons of videos maybe 50Gb isn't enough, but
for us it is and you can always move pictures manually off the phone and since
we both have 1Tb of OneDrive storage via the Office 365 subscription there is
plenty of space there.
In the end it's like with anything, you can probably find free storage, as I
said, Google I am pretty sure offers it, but sometimes you get what you pay for.
