It would have been better if they had duplicated the bottom speaker at the top.It would have had a better stereo field.

There should be 2 speakers on the XR, one at the bottom of the phone near the charging port, and one at the top of the phone near the handset/speaker. I know you know that the one where you hold the phone near your ear, but this also acts as an external speaker. You can test it by completely covering the bottom speaker when music or other audio is playing, and see if you still hear the audio. On my XR the bottom speaker is more powerful, but I still get quite a bit of sound from the other speaker when I cover the bottom one.
