HI Carolyn, Notifications can come from apps that you've installed that can send you short spurts of information such as breaking news, weather updates etc. When you install an app it will usually ask you if you want to allow notifications and this is where you select whether you want them or not. You can go to the notifications section under settings and choose whether you want them to speak on the locked screen.
