And while you don’t have to see the screen, there is also no advantage in terms of battery saving to have the screen curtain on unless you have an iPhone X, iPhone XS/XS Max or 11 Pro/Pro Max. All of these phones have OLED screens which does not require backlighting hence having the screen black may make a very small difference in battery usage. On any other iPhone it makes 0 difference and you are much better off making sure automatic brightness is off and brightness is set to 0%. Of course if you are concerned about privacy and others seeing what you do on your phone the screen curtain is fine.
