The recording feature of the WhatsApp has been there since quite a while. As Ari mentioned, the best part about recording voice message through WhatsApp is that you don't have to keep on holding the button just lock it and keep on recording and once done simply double-tap to send this. This is one of the reason I like WhatsApp.
