Not sure if blocking a number would prevent you from receiving text messages. I had a text message from somebody whom I hadn't yet added as a contact and after opening the conversation I double tapped on the number at the top then double tapped on "Info" and then on the next screen again on the number. Here you have all the usual options near the end like "create new contact", "Add to existing contact" and also "Block Caller". I just question if this would block text messages since it specifically says "Block Caller". You can of course try it and if it doesn't block text messages you can always mute the conversation and at least you wouldn't be bothered by it and usually these messages stop eventually.
