I also got no option to block.
First you say a text message then a phone call you can see in recents. I don't
believe the text messages from groups that you want to delete are considered
phone calls and will show there. That would make it easier to delete.
What I get in messages is an info button then an option to delete or remove
under more. I'm not sure that was the order of things. At one point it actually
asked if I wanted to delete the conversation and I said yes, but I forgot to
look for the done button. No matter which arrangement of moves I do, the number
is still there aside from simply deleting it for the time being.
I'm thinking the that the person who created the group list
needs to redo it or delete and start over leaving those of us out of it that do
not want to be in it.
Otherwise maybe I can find the way to group all those numbers
myself then delete them in one fell swoop.

Here’s what I did that finally worked. I double-tapped the number or name at
the top of the message from whom the message was sent. Then, I scrolled to the
info button and double-tapped on it. There I got to a details screen where I
once again double-tapped on the name or number of the person I wanted to block.
This opened up a screen in my contacts list, probably the same one found under
recents. I scrolled down to the bottom of the screen and found the block
caller option. I double-tapped on that and then double-tapped in the
appropriate place to confirm that I wanted to block the caller.

Yes it is.
Touch the number, flick up to more, double tap, and then see if a button
labeled Info shows up, if not repeat the above until you find a button called
Info and double tap it.
You should then find the usual buttons to share etc., and the last one on the
screen will be block contact.
Double tap, then flick to block again and double tap and you can delete the
messages and that number won't be able to text you.

Is there a way to block a number that texts you? Evidently, someone with my
number previously was in some kind of group, and I keep getting texts about
someone dropping out. I wish they'd all drop out, and I wouldn't hear any more
