Security flaws in home routers are discovered all the time. These flaws can, for example, allow access into your home network from the Internet. Even if you keep the firmware updated on the router (and most people do not), eventually the router manufacturer no longer will support a router 4-5 years old with security fixes.

A good rule of thumb is to replace your home router about every 4 years (even if working and even if you have been doing the firmware updates). And, there have been advances in wi-fi capabilities in the last several years that you may be able to take advantage of.

I've had a Netgear router now for about eight years, and I have no complaints.
When I bought it, I was considering Netgear or Asus. I'm not sure what's
changed recently though.

Subject: Time To Get A New Router

My Medialink router has served me well for 8.5 years, but it quit this
afternoon.
What routers are recommended now? I will be using it with my iphone and
Victor Reader on wifi, and my computer via wired connection. Thanks for any
suggestions.
