On my Netgear, I log into the router through a browser and it let's me know if there's a firmware update and gives me the option to have it installed. After a lightning strike, I wasn't able to log onto my router, and there was a way to download firmware to my PC, connect my PC to the router with an ethernet cable and upload the new firmware to the router. I don't recall seeing a setting to have the firmware updated automatically.
