And the original poster should also take into consideration that Apple 
apparently is going to introduce a bunch of cool new features which you may or 
may not get with the regular Airpods. I assume if you do get them that there 
might be a new generation of regular Airpods coming out, but of course that is 
just speculation. Despite the fact how so many people like the Airpods, regular 
or Pro, I still believe that for me they are not worth the price especially not 
until they figure out how they seamlessly and instantly switch back and forth 
between your iPhone and Apple Watch.

I think Simon is steering you in the right direction. You don't want the Airpod 
Pros but the Airpods, as Simon describes below. You asked if you can use them 
while they're in the charging case, and the answer is no you cannot. You cannot 
place them in your ear while they're in the charging case, and when you place 
the Airpods in the charging case the Bluetooth connection is shutdown.
