You can write in grade 2, grade 1, or computer braille all of which is controlled by the screen reader settings. So, for VoiceOver, in the VoiceOver Braille settings, you can set your input to whatever you like.

If you press space+dot7,1, then immediately press space+dot7,4 then quickly press the letter d, an email will be sent. I sometimes have to do that twice, but I think that is because I was not quite fast enough. Navigating with the rotor works as expected. this is much better for me than doing the on-screen braille. The Writer is so small and light I am taking it everywhere with me.
