Hi all - problem solved!
Rang Apple and told them what I had done already. they suggested
re-booting Router as Debby suggested, it worked.
I didn't do this earlier because nothing has changed on my local network
for months and months. Now of course i remembered that last night I
disconnected my WIFI enabled TV and i think the router may have got
confused between this old IP address allocation and my SE re-joining the
network.
Could kick myself for missing this, guess I should make up a checklist
and follow it religeously next time.

Have you rebooted your modem/router? Any chance you can go to somewhere else
and try another wifi network?

Before I send my 3 month old SE back as faulty has anyone come across this
problem already?
I am running IOS 13.7 and haven't changed any setting recently.
Yesterday I noticed that although my local WIFI network was still showing in
the status bar my SE couldn't connect to the Internet.
My home WIFI is working fine and everything else can connect to the Internet,
including my wife's SE.
I turned off the WIFI on my SE and everything worked just fine using mobile
data.
I went into settings/reset and reset network connections, re-input my password
to re-join the home WIFI, no errors about passwords or not connecting and
again my local WIFI network showed up in the status bar.
but once again I could not connect to the Internet via WIFI.
Has anyone else had this problem happen to them, wondering if it is a generic
SE bug?
