So the 5th gen doesn't sound louder when using VoiceOver than on the 4th gen? I find that VoiceOver on the 4th gen is very low and definitly hard to hear. I don't want to purchase the 5th gen hoping for louder VoiceOver when it isn't any better.

I find the fourth generation and the fifth generation to be pretty close and how they sound. I too like the US voice, and I am not bothered by the tinniness.

It is more tinny than the 4s, but less tinny than the 3rd gen touch.
But, I'm happy with the default U.S. voice where a lot of people I know can't stand it and use the Australian voice instead.
So, it is hard to quantify such a subjective thing as how voices sound.

Richard what does VoiceOver sound like on the new touch since you are hearing more treble? Does it sound tinny for example. Thanks!

Mary and all,

My 5th gen touch came a day early, very nice surprise.

I would say the speaker is certainly better than the 3rd generation touch. It has more treble in it than the iPhone 4S. The 4S has a fuller sound and
will handle a bit more volume without starting to distort.
I personally would have no trouble listening to books or even music over the speaker, though music will be far more enjoyable over headphones or external
speakers.

I too am surprised and disappointed that they did not include ear phones
with the button on the cord. It seems incredibly cheap on Apple's part to not include that. They took the step of adding Siri, but you are not given the option out of the box to access Siri from the headset. And, as always
with the touch, they don't include a wall charger.
I will say, the earbuds do sound better than the old ones. I also have my Bose with the in-line mic and controls, but I don't always want to use them.

The other thing that will take some getting used to is how much thinner and longer it is than the 3rd gen. It is a good half inch taller and since it
has a thinner frame, it seems narrower, but the screen area is the same
width.

I did a restore from my backup and everything appeared pretty much the same
as on my 3rd gen except for the extra new apps like FaceTime and Passbook
and camera.

The fact that we can now put 16 apps in each folder is very nice.

Richard

Richard,

When you get that 5th gen Touch, please let us know what you think of the
speaker as compared with the speaker on your present model. I think you and I may have the same, 3rd gen touch. I'm hoping that the speaker is a little improved on this new one but haven't made it to the Mac store to check that out. I'm kind of waiting on the iPad mini announcement to see what it offers versus the new Touch, and one of the things that would really make me look hard at the Touch would be if the speaker were more or less on par with the
one in the 4S. I suppose that's a small thing, but for me, that 3rd gen
Touch speaker got to be a real drag. Sure there is airplay and there are
docks. But sometimes it is just nice to have the device by itself.
