Rose, it isn't just the microphone, but also the button to control playback
of audio.
As others have already pointed out though, having the microphone on the cord
makes it easier to access Siri and do some recording when perhaps you don't
want to have the sound of your hand moving on the device when recording, not
to mention all the other things already said.

If the iPod touch has a built-in microphone, and you won't be answering it
like a phone why would you want a microphone?

Mary and all,

My 5th gen touch came a day early, very nice surprise.

I would say the speaker is certainly better than the 3rd generation touch.
It has more treble in it than the iPhone 4S. The 4S has a fuller sound and
will handle a bit more volume without starting to distort.
I personally would have no trouble listening to books or even music over the
speaker, though music will be far more enjoyable over headphones or external
speakers.

I too am surprised and disappointed that they did not include ear phones
with the button on the cord. It seems incredibly cheap on Apple's part to
not include that. They took the step of adding Siri, but you are not given
the option out of the box to access Siri from the headset. And, as always
with the touch, they don't include a wall charger.
I will say, the earbuds do sound better than the old ones. I also have my
Bose with the in-line mic and controls, but I don't always want to use them.

The other thing that will take some getting used to is how much thinner and
longer it is than the 3rd gen. It is a good half inch taller and since it
has a thinner frame, it seems narrower, but the screen area is the same
width.

I did a restore from my backup and everything appeared pretty much the same
as on my 3rd gen except for the extra new apps like FaceTime and Passbook
and camera.

The fact that we can now put 16 apps in each folder is very nice.

HTH,
Richard

Richard,

When you get that 5th gen Touch, please let us know what you think of the
speaker as compared with the speaker on your present model. I think you and
I may have the same, 3rd gen touch. I'm hoping that the speaker is a little
improved on this new one but haven't made it to the Mac store to check that
out. I'm kind of waiting on the iPad mini announcement to see what it offers
versus the new Touch, and one of the things that would really make me look
hard at the Touch would be if the speaker were more or less on par with the
one in the 4S. I suppose that's a small thing, but for me, that 3rd gen
Touch speaker got to be a real drag. Sure there is airplay and there are
docks. But sometimes it is just nice to have the device by itself.
