It uses a standard lightning port. I guess what I'm asking is, do I need a
brick made for a lightning cable, or will my older standard usb charging
brick work with both a lightning cable and a regular charging cable?

I'd recommend getting an anker cable from amazon. Anker makes great cables
as well as wall blocks and portable batteries. There is a 20 watt anker
wall block that would work great with your iPad. You could get a USBC to
lightning 6 foot cable and a 20 watt USBC wall block for some fast charging.
