Hi, Indeed, to select text you need to position yourself at the beginning of the text that you want to select and then start selecting. You are right, it does not select backwards.
As for selecting when you are not in an edit text, this is a new thing for me to but I got it to work pretty consistently. What exactly doesn't work in your case? The steps I take are: 1. Position the cursor off voiceover at the beginning of the text I want to select regardless whether it is edit text or just normal text. 2. Turn rotor to word or lines or character whatever is best suited for the text I want to select. 3. Perform the pinch gesture until the text that I want is selected. 4. Turn the rotor until I find the edit option. This option is not available in normal text before you perform the pinch gesture to select text. 5. Choose the select option by flicking up or down.
