My recommendation would be to look at Koodo here in Canada which is one of the 
MVNO's owned by Telus. It runs on the same network and you will most likely pay 
less. My wife and I have unlimited nationwide calling and texting, simple voice 
mail and 10 Gb of data for $55. If you don't need that much data you can 
probably get something for $45 to $50 a month. You can still get a new phone 
from Koodo as well except with Koodo you get it for a monthly payment, e.g. you 
can probably get an iPhone 11 for $0 down and maybe $15 a month over 2 years on 
what they call a "Tab". This means if you had a $49 plan you would pay $64 for 
2 years, after that your phone is paid off and your plan drops back to $49 if 
you keep the phone, if you want to upgrade you can sell your current phone for 
whatever you can get and buy a new one in the same way. Some of the latest 
phones like a 12 Pro or Pro Max probably require a $150 or $200 downpayment + 
your monthly tab, but you would simply have to check the Koodo website for the 
offers they currently have. We bought the iPhone 8 this way almost 3 years ago, 
last fall when we had paid them off, we paid a total of $510 for the iPhone 8 
over 2 years which, when it was new was selling for more than that, we sold our 
iPhone 8's for $300 locally through our Facebook buy and sell groups. This 
means we essentially paid $210 for using our iPhones for the 2 year period, I 
then bought an iPhone 11 for $0 down + my monthly tab and my wife got an iPhone 
11 Pro which at the time required a downpayment + the monthly tab. I am sure 
most people who bought an iPhone 12 of any sort are fairly happy with them, but 
being half way through the cycle until the new phones come out this fall I 
suggest you wait. How much do you pay with Telus? If it's more than $60 a month 
I would simply take your paid off phone to Koodo and get a cheaper plan, then 
wait until around Black Friday which is when they often have pretty smoking 
deals for upgrading to a newer phone.

If you have an XR you really should wait for the 13 series phones unless of 
course therre is something wrong with your XR and it doesn't work any more. The 
12 series phones with first generation 5G are in my opinion like the iPhone 5, 
6, 7 and iPhone X, all of these are not rated as highly as the 5S, 6S, 8 and 
XR/iPhone 11. Apart from second generation 5G support it is rumoured that the 
iPhone 13 phones will have both Touch Id and Face Id which will give you the 
best of two worlds, they are rumoured to all have LiDAR which going forward I 
am sure will be used by apps such as Seeing AI and others to give you more and 
better information about your surroundings. I furthermore don't see all that 
much reason for a blind person to get a Pro phone unless of course somebody 
likes the huge size of the Pro Max phones so the regular iPhone 13 will most 
likely be an excellent phone and I may consider upgrading from my iPhone 11 if 
it does indeed have both Face Id and Touch Id as well as LiDAR..

I take your point, but my XR trade in value would be reduced also by that time.

I suppose you have to take the plunge and update at sometime knowing newer
