Is the Sonos rome an airplay 2 speaker? If you have a Bose 500 speaker and a
Sonos can you play both speakers at the same time like I can with my Apple TV?
With my Bose sound link which is a Bluetooth speaker, I can use the Bose
connect app to put two of those speakers in party mode and stereo. Can the same
thing be done with the Rome speaker?
I guess it is probablya stereo speaker so that question is probably not
appropriate.
I like the Bose sound link speaker as it is small and portable but I’m sure the
Sonos speakers have better output.

Yeah I use to have my play one speakers mounted on the wall,

I did that myself but then it probably wasn’t fantastically right positioning
but hey it worked fine and I never get people to do what I can do pretty much
as well.

Richard said it well, there really is no installation required unless you want
the speakers wall mounted in which case you or somebody else would have to find
a stud in your wall and screw the wall mount onto the wall. Apart from that you
just find a shelf or whatever else to put the speaker on and your only
requirement would be that you are near a wall outlet so you can plug it in, but
of course you could use an extension cord if you are too far. Once the speaker
is plugged in you open the app and it will recognize the new speaker and tell
you what to do. Richard called the app "quite accessible", I am not sure what
the "quite" part is because I think it is fully and entirely accessible and
easy to use. I actually find it is so easy and well done that it's quite fun to
set up a new speaker.

You can start with any speaker Sonos makes whether it's a Roam or a single
Sonos SL and add anything else to it whenever you have the money or feel like
it.

the Sonos App makes setting it up pretty easy and they have very good support
if anything goes wrong.

It certainly can be a stand-alone item.

You will want to download the Sonos app for setting it up. The app is quite
accessible with VoiceOver.

I was hesitant to get into Sonos because of the cost.

But, my wife and I had decided that in retirement we wanted a sound system that
could go throughout the house.

A local high-end audio store came to do an assessment with recommendations.

It would have cost something like $1600 for them to hard-wire a system that
would just cover the living room and kitchen.

We decided hard-wired was not the way to go.

When I brought up wireless, he said that Sonos would be the way to go.

To keep a long story, less long; they would have charged I think around $400 to
install a Sonos system.

Thanks to Sieghard, I/we did it ourselves quite easily.

The app pretty well walks you through the process. Reading the instructions
ahead on their web site helps.

I'll round off the numbers; but between January and May, we bought the Arc
sound bar for our TV; $650, two Sonos 1 SL'S also for the living room for $170
each; one Sonos 1 SL for my wife's office, $170, two Sonos 1 SL, $170 each, for
my office; two Sonos 1's, $180 each, for the kitchen; and the Sonos Roam, $170,
for the bedbroom or for taking outside.

We dealt with our local Video Only where we had bought our 43 inch Samsung TV
last August. So he gave us some deals since we were buying several. We bought 3
of the SL 1's and the two Sonos 1's the same day...

The arc, Sonos 1's, and the Roam all have the option of using Alexa or Google
Assistant.

So, to get around to your question; it will be very easy to install whatever
you want in an apartment.

Sorry for the long winded answer.

and simply read about the Sonos music system. Richard mentioned the Sonos Roam
because he has recently become a "Sonos convert" and I think very much enjoys
the experience just as pretty much everybody who has a Sonos system does. The
short answer is that Sonos is a lot more than a speaker, the Roam is just their
latest or at least almost latest edition to their line-up of high quality
multi-room speakers. Sonos speakers use WiFi because they are part of a music
system of speakers who talk to each other and while all the new speakers
released in the last few years are Airplay 2 capable, it used to be the case
that you really only used your iPhone and the Sonos app as a remote to control
your system. Sonos connects to a huge list of paid and free music services
including all the popular ones like Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, Tidal,
YouTube Music, Tune In, iHeart Radio and so on and also can connect to Audible
and AudioBooks.com. If you are at home you then simply select the room where
you want to play music and what music you want to play and it will play. If you
want to play music in 2 or 3 rooms or all over your house it's no problem, as
long as you have a Sonos speaker or speakers in a room you can group any rooms
or the entire house. The first portable speaker Sonos released was the Move
about 2 or maybe almost 3 years ago, but it was rather large and still quite
expensive and while it's a great speaker for the deck or in the backyard, it's
probably not a speaker you want to throw in your backpack wwhen you go
somewhere and this is where the Roam comes in, it's more the size of a Bose
Soundlink, but since it is a Sonos speaker it still is part of the Sonos system
when you are at home and connected to WiFi and only if you are out of range of
your WiFi it will automatically switch to Bluetooth and act just like any other
Bluetooth speaker.

By now Sonos has a very large and complete selection of speakers for all rooms
and uses from the two portable speakers to the Sonos SL which is basically the
size of a Sonos Move but not portable (all of these speakers can also be set up
as a stereo pair if you have two of the same), then you have the Sonos One
which is like the Sonos SL but it has microphones and you can set it up either
with Alexa or the Google Assistant. Then you have the Sonos Five which is a
much larger speaker, more like a traditional boombox and you can use a single
Five in horizontal orientation or, if you have two of them, place them upright
to work as a stereo pair. Next is the TV surround setup for the living room
which consists of either the smaller Beam soundbar or the much larger Arc
soundbar, both are capable of Dolby Atmos sound and you get the best result if
you add a set of Sonos SL as rear speakers and the Sonos wireless Sub as a
subwover. The Beam and Arc of course would be placed underneath your TV, the
rear speakers would be behind you and can be wall mounted and the Sonos Sub is
about the size of a desktop tower, but it weighs a little over 35 pounds and
despite I ts compact size it's an absolutely amazing sub. You can even add a
second Sub to the setup for maximum base. Of course this is not a cheap system,
an Arc soundbar, two Sonos SL rear speakers and a wireless Sub sold as a
surround package here in Canada is I think somewhere around $23,50, in USD I
think around $1,600 or $1,700.

Sonos also has a partnership with Ikea and they have just released a digital
picture frame which also acts as a Sonos speaker, not sure if it has the
digital assistant capability and I along with many other Sonos fans who have
had their system for a long time (I bought my first Sonos gear in 2009) are all
holding our breath for a headset which may really be coming in the next year or
so, finally. It's expected that this would be a full-size over the ear design
in the $500 or so price range, but again also capable of being a "zone" in a
Sonos system. This means I can play any music or audio book directly on it or,
if my wife is watching TV and I want to listen but do something in the kitchen
I can group it with the living room and listen in to the same thing.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Which brings up another question. What's the advantage of a speaker being able
to connect with WiFi, and also be able to pair via bluetooth? If your device is
already using WiFi, why should the speaker also have to use WiFi? Not sure I
understand how this works.

Well, the Sonos Roam, which is both Wi-Fi and Buetooth, has aprox. 10 hours of
battery life on a full charge, has tone settings if you go through the Sonos
app. You can turn on or off the Loudness feature that boosts the base for
everything; which I find will cause it to clip at anything but a very low
volume.

But, it actually has settings to adjust the base and treble on a slider that
works.

We have other Sonos speakers, so it made sense to get this one.

$169.

And has been pointed out, there are some very basic settings in the music app
on the iPhone. And quite a few pre-set settings for different styles of music
in there as well.

The Roam gives plenty of volume and has great sound.

Hello iPhone Listers,

I have a Bluetooth question. I own several speakers including a couple of Bose
ones. Unfortunately, none of my speakers offers the option to control the
amount of bass and treble being put out. Sometimes, I think the Bose units put
out too much bass. Does anyone have any idea what kind of speakers offers tone
options? Thanks in advance.
