Rick, Just having tried this on my iPad Mini, I can confirm that it works perfectly on mine, holding the iPad Mini perfectly upright on the x axis, I can turn it 90 degrees either way, and the iPad Mini will correctly, and very quickly announce that the screen has rotated. This keeping the iPad Mini very much perfectly upright. No tilt required at all.
I am typing on it either with Fleksy which I own, or, with the same method you describe for use with your iPhone. Having owned the larger full sized iPad, that is how I generally used that too.
