Even on an LCD phone like my 11 the screen is still black when screen curtain is turned on because when you turn it on brightness is automatically set to 0% so the little bit of backlighting which may exist doesn't come through at all. I know this because my wife always tells me "your screen is black" if I want to show her something and forget to turn off screen curtain.

Sighted people are freaked out at first because they think I am using a specialized device. With LCD screens, black is a color illuminated by the display while with OLED, black does not turn on the small little lights on the display whatsoever.
