OK, if it is actually a lightning plug, I thought as far back as the 6S the
lightning port could also be used as an earphone jack with the earphones tha
have the lightning plug.
If it is a USB C plug then no it won't.

I have used lightning plug earphones on the original SE, so maybe I'm making a
wrong assumption that it would also work on the 6S.

But, no, it won't plug into the 3.5 jack; so I gather you tried them in the
lightning port and got no sound, right?

I stand corrected.

But, again, assuming they have the lightning plug, they will work with all
phones since the first gen SE, if not earlier.

Richard, I am confused! I think you are saying that the new phones only have
the lightning input which is fine but then you go on to say these lightning
headphones will work with new and old phones, which they don't, certainly not
with my current 6 se.
