Thanks for the suggestion but I’ve tried that to no avail. I have now managed to remove it by launching Messages and double tapping Edit. Double tapping Recent Messages and deleting the conversation from there.  Once the conversation was deleted the particular message went too. I have never had this issue before but hope this explanation may help someone.
