Why should you have waited? If you need or really want a new phone then that is when you should get one. You can always wait for the next year's phones if you think that way. In your case I think you upgraded from an iPhone 8 to a 13 Pro Max which is a significant upgrade. What I don't really understand is when people upgrade from a 13 Pro to a 14 Pro or even a 12 Pro to a 14 Pro. There are two technologies which I think I would like to have and that is LiDAR and Mag Safe charging, but neither I find is critical enough for me to even warrant an upgrade from my 11 to a 14 Pro. Apart from LiDAR I can't think of a single thing off the top of my hat which I could do with an iPhone 14 Pro that I can't do with my 11.
