Personally, I would not want to be running around with 512 or a terabyte of memory on my iPhone in five years with the transfer speed of USB 2, which is the current standard. The transfer rate is 480 MBPS. USB 4 with USBC will have either a 40 or 80 gig per second transfer rate, depending on the specification Apple chooses to implement.
Christopher, the European Union is forcing the issue by requiring all electronic devices to use USBC. Tony Fadell, who invented the iPod, said the EU action was necessary at this point because Apple is now a monopoly and someone needs to force the issue because competition cannot. The question will be which technology standard Apple will adopt.
