This was an iPhone that was purchased through ebay so there was no insurance
on it as it is an unlocked phone and not bought through Verizon or any other
cell phone carrier.

now, that has such a low probability of occurring that my insurance covers

Or slipping out of one's pocket and having a car run over it, which is
what happened to someone I know. If he hadn't had an Otterbox Defender
case on the phone, it would have crushed the thing. This was an older
iPhone, but it is always better to be safe than sorry and use a very
sturdy otterbox defender case. Luckily he only had to pay to have the LCD
fixed, the phone received no damaged to the actual screen.

I don't think the screen protector is going to do much to prohibit the
screen from cracking on impact. The screen protector is mostly
protection against scratching. I almost went without any case, but
then decided a case is useful in protecting against impact damage
possibilities. In my situation though, I was just trying to be extra
careful. It really seems to me that the IPhone 5 is built well enough
that it likely doesn't need a case for normal every day relatively
careful use. AS was mentioned though there can be the possible slip
out of your hands issue.

Also, the iPhone 5 has one less layer of glass from what I read. This was
as
part of the effort to make the overall phone thinner. There are theories
that the entire concept of screen protectors and cases is a way for
manufacturers to make money and phones don't really need them.
Whether it's true or not I still choose to have cases for my phones, but
I
no longer subscribe to the opinion that Otterbox Defender cases are the
way
to go. I still want to enjoy the thin feel of my phone. However to each
his/her own. If someone wants to go with a naked iPhone and nothing ever
happens to it, great.

Um, I'd get a protector. That screen can still be cracked quite easily.

I finally got around to upgrading to the iPhone 5. I was very
impressed with its thin design, and had considered not getting a case
for it, but after it almost slipped out of my hand twice, i thought
better and got a simple case that covers the back and sides. It does
not have a screen protector, as i have never used one. I was told
that the screen is made of Gorilla Glass, and a protector is
unnecessary. The case makes it easier to hold, but like any case, it
takes away from that thinness that is just so cool.
