I'm a little confused about the difference in shape between the lightning
and C ends. Are they simular?

That is only true if you have a wall charger which also has a USB-C plug.
There are still many wall adapters out there which have a regular full-size
USB-A port in which case you would need a cable with USB-A (large USB plug
on one end and a USB-C on the other end which would plug into your iPhone.
Of course the way of the future is USB-C and most of the new wall adapters
which provide the proper power for fast charging will have USB-C ports or
you may have a third party adapter with multiple ports in which case often
you have 1 full-size USB-A port and 1, 2 or 3 USB-C ports.

A cable with USB C on both ends is what you need. With the 15 series Apple
has finally done away with the proprietary lightning connector.
