Sorry, haven’t tried with Whatsapp, but you may try “Make a video call to John Smith with Whatsapp” and this may start a video call instead of an audio call. Of course if you open Whatsapp and have a person who uses Whatsapp, you can initiate either a video call or an audio call from within Whatsapp.

I open Whatsapp, and under the New Call button is: To place a Whatsapp voice or video call, tap the New Call button and select a contact Tapping the New Call button brings up the contacts section list. Each person’s name is followed by the word “invite”. Tapping person X brings up a send text screen. The TO: field has the phone number. The text field seems to have a web address. Hello, My visiting brother-in-law setup my Iphone with Whatsapp, to be able to have a video call with his family in England. This we did, each calling each other and getting a video connection. Now my Contacts has a second card for him (added by Whatsapp) with a button for video. If a friend has whatsapp installed can one of us call the other and each phone will make an automatic video connection. Or, will each of us have to make manual configuration setting first?
