Hi Sieghar, all,
I trust you have no objection in jumping in on this thread but pls can
you let me know how you activact that noise reduction feature?
I can't appear to find that on my own different type airbuds but reckon
the way Apple does it should assist me?
Thanks in advance,
Tony in Dublin Ireland

Different from what would be my question.
If you mean different from Airpods 2 or 3 then simply different in
that it is a new generation with a newer chip and you can get them
either with or without noise cancellation for the first time. I think
at least it’s the first time that active noise cancellation is offered
with the regular Airpods, before this was only available with the
Airpods Pro.
If you mean how are they different to Airpods Pro then the answer
would be that they don’t have a thingi with a silicon piece which
stick inside your ear canal. They are basically like a set of wired
Earpods if you were to cut the cable off.
I was very impressed by the active noise cancellation of the Airpods
4. When you have ANC on a set of Airpods Pro which basically
completely seal your ear canal from outside noise or even with a big
over the head and over the ear headset like the Airpod Max, a certain
amount of noise reduction is already achieved by blocking your ears.
But when you take the Airpod 4 which just sits in the outer part of
your ear just like the wired Earpods, I would say 90% to 95% of
outside noice can still be heard which is why I like wearing my wired
Earpods so much when I am walking and want to listen to a book or to
directions from the GPS etc. I often only put in the right side which
means my left ear is entirely unobstructed and I still hear very well
with my right ear as well.
When I tried the Airpod 4 with ANC at the Apple Store I could hear
just as much when I first put them in my ears, but as soon as he
turned on the ANC, it was like closing the very thick door to a well
insulated room and just about all the noise went away. If you have
never experienced this, it’s like magic. Then when the Apple employee
was speaking to me he turned on transparency mode and suddenly it was
like opening that door again and I could hear just fine. I am
definitely going to order a pair of these and already ordered a set of
these ear hooks as well as a cable/string gadget to connect them
together since I know for sure it wouldn’t take long for me to lose
them. Hopefully this won’t happen with those accessories.

The AirPods Max are an old style over the ear headset.

Hi,
As I am currently in Vancouver training with my new guide dog,
I decided to go ahead and buy an iPhone 16 Pro. I placed the
order via the Apple Store website for pick up at an Apple
Store near my hotel and while I was there asked to have a
brief demo of the Airpods 4 with noise cancellation. I always
thought Airpods had a thingi which sticks inside your ear, but
the Apple Store employee told me that only the Airpod Pro has
that and the regular Airpods are basically not really all that
different than the wired Earpods except of course they don’t
have a wire. I hate anything sticking in my ear hence I’d
never buy the Airpods Pro, but I must say that I was very
surprised by the regular Airpods 4. When he enabled the noise
cancellation feature all the noise in the Apple Store which
are typically very noisy, just about vanished like somebody
closed a thick door and I couldn’t even hear the employee
speaking to me from a few feet away. He then turned on
transparency mode and to my surprise I could hear him and
everything around me perfectly. Once again, I assumed that
this feature would result in less than optimal hearing of what
is going on around you and that naybe it would sound
artificial, but it really is amazing how good it sounds. I am
at this point pretty much sold on these little things with one
exception and that is the ease of how they may fall out and
get lost. I have hand injuries and am missing a couple of
fingers on each hand and at one point when I tried to try to
use the play/pause function I accidently knocked it loose and
even just there in the store it bounced off the table and fell
down. I’m sure I would get a hang of them in time, but I was
wondering if anybody is using any sort of gadget to connect
them together with a string or cable. I think it’s silly of
Apple not to design them with a small loop/hole so you could
at least connect them together, but while I haven’t looked
yet, I assume third party solutions exist which accomplish this?
Best regards,
Sieghard
