Matt may have something here. It would make sense that you cannot make standard phone calls on a phone that has no cell number of its own, and you cannot have two phones with the same phone number.
While you can make FaceTime and Skype calls over Wi-Fi, so it could be the Wi-Fi calling is enabled on the new phone, but not the old XR. My understanding is that Wi-Fi calling is a feature that allows you to use your personal or other wireless networks to route calls to your carrier, in lieu of a cellular connection. Once you transfer service to a new device, and you don’t have cellular service on that old device, This will likely not work. You should still be able to use non-cellular communication options, like FaceTime, WhatsApp, Signal, etc. because those do not rely on services from your carrier. I called my phone carrier T-Mobile after I tried turning on Wi-Fi calling on my old XR phone, and I kept getting a message if I want to use Wi-Fi calling I will need to call T-Mobile. I called T-Mobile, and I asked them about this, they said they don’t see that I ever had a XR phone with them. I explained I had a XR phone for 6 years with them, and matter of fact, I told them I’ve been with them as my phone carrier for 20 years. So, after the rep kept putting me on hold, he finally told me they will need to turn on the Wi-Fi from their end and that will take 24 hours, and he told me that last Thursday. I never got any text message from them, and I still can’t use Wi-Fi calling on my old XR phone. Thank you all. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
