Hi all!
I thought that’s how you always get someone who knows English. I always
thought they matched the volunteer to the person requesting the help by
language so that makes logical sense to me. I have never had anyone who’s cocky
enough to think they know more English than they actually did; so they must
test volunteers for English fluency, or fluency of other language for folks who
don’t speak English as well. I believe that in the case of English, they must
test volunteers when they regester, particularly for when the volunteer has
learned English later in life as an additional language. Ok, that’s my guess
because there are always the brave and cocky folks who claim to know a language
when they only know a few words of it; which includes English too. reminder:
learning a whole language is not at all the same thing as learning just a few
words in a language. They are two totally different ball games. The difference
is day and night for those who have not attempted this kind of activity. Well,
I have since I’m still at it with learning Spanish and have been at it with
Spanish for 5 years now, so speaking from first hand experience here. With that
said, I’d hope that Be My Eyes has such a system to weed out the overly
confident folks to avoid preventable language barrier problems. I have not
heard anyone complaining about getting volunteers who don’t know as much
English in them as they’d like so they must have some sort of system to prevent
such problems. I’m glad if they do because it avoids a lot of headaches,
especially in the monolangual English speaking world.

No worries, I read about this years ago. They put the calls into places that
are in different time zones but still speak your chosen language. Use the app
and let folks waiting for calls get a chance to participate.
