Thanks VaShaun. This totally makes sense & I am relieved. I had the phone plugged in at around the same time but in a different room as I had company. It was when I went to unplugged it & noticed the 80%& no charging message.

It sat at 80 percent for an hour while plugged in, then reached 100 by morning. That is the iPhone deliberately holding the charge at 80 and finishing the last stretch later. Apple calls it Optimized Battery Charging. It learns the hours you normally have the phone on the cable and waits, because a battery parked at full for eight hours ages faster than one that gets there just before you pick it up. While it is holding, the phone is connected but no current is going into the battery. So the status bar is correct to read you the percentage and leave out the word charging. Nothing got switched off. That word is not a VoiceOver announcement with a setting of its own, it is part of what the battery item reports, and it appears only while the battery is actually taking charge. The feature can be turned off, and it lives with the battery settings rather than anywhere in VoiceOver. I am not going to guess the exact wording for your version and send you hunting. Somebody here will give it to you word for word. One thing you can rule out. If this were the fixed 80 percent charge limit, it would never have passed 80 at all, and yours did. As for checking without watching the percentage, the chime when you plug in tells you the phone accepted the connection, and the battery screen in Settings states the current condition in words rather than leaving you to infer it. Were you plugging in at your usual time of night when it stalled at 80? When I plug my phone in to charge, it no longer says charging. I generally touch the top right corner of the apps screen & it will say 50 Percent charged, charging or something like that. Now it just says whatever percent it is at & does not say charging even if plugged in. Last night it charged to 80%. & an hour later it was still 80% even though still plugged in. Since it charged last night I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the cord. I tried different outlets with the same result. I also tried plugging in other things in the outlet I usually use & they worked fine. I have not changed any settings on the phone. Although I generally stop at 80%, I left the phone plugged in. Even though it did not say charging it was at 100% this morning. Is there some other way to check that the phone is charging other than waiting to see if the percentage changes? Is this announcement something that could have been turned off somehow?
