It sounds like the layout is confusing you a bit. It took me a little while to 
figure it out.

Here's how it works. Turn the device so the home button is on the right. Face 
the screen entirely away from you and hold it with your fingertips at each end. 
On the left side, are dots 1, 2, and 3, arranged the short way. You'll put your 
index finger, middle finger and ring finger down on them the short way as the 
remaining part of the finger curves over the short end of the phone. Do the 
same with the right hand.

In other words, the dots are not oriented along the length of the phone, but 
more like a split keyboard, with dots 1-2-3 on the left the short way and dots 
4-5-6 on the right the short way. Dots 1 and 4 are on the top in this 
orientation, dots 2 and 5 are in the middle, and dots 3 and 6 are on the 
bottom. Once you do this, don't move your fingers vertically, and it will all 
most likely be clear very shortly. The help section on the main screen is quite 
informative, as well.
