Whenever I come to that conclusion, I start testing to see if I am making 
mistakes. My first test is 
to find a sighted person who is willing to observe what I am doing and what 
response I am receiving.

For use of the camera, you need to allow enough distance for proper focal 
length of the lens in the 
camera. My bet, based on what you are reporting, is that you are having the 
camera too close to the 
object. I am also willing to bet you are shadowing the object, either with your 
phone, your body, or 
something else.
