If you're doing a lot of travel over a short period and wifi is important to you, it's worth planning ahead, buying a monthly pass with a provider such as GoGo in-flight Wifi, and sticking with airlines that use it. This way, wifi in the air is actually quite cost effective. The Gogo app is accessible and I've had good luck with the service, even streaming Mushroom FM from the air with no break-up at all.
I first used international wifi on a flight between the US and Frankfurt in 2006 on Lufthansa, then a little after that, they pulled the service. Some international carriers are only just now bringing it back, one such carrier is United who recently announced they were equipping international flights with in-flight wifi.
