The way I did this is as follows.  Move all your important messages to a folder 
and then export them.  Then delete your all mail messages, then go to trash and 
tell them to delete for good.  ONce you do this, they will be all gone.  I had 
to do this about a month ago because I had over 12 thousand messages, that 
weren't needed.  Like I said, make sure you export messages you want to keep, 
otherwise they will delete them too when you say delete for good.  I use 
outlook sometimes on the windows side, and all I did is create a local folder, 
move a copy of the important messages there.  Went to the gmail website, and 
did what I explained above.  once it was done, I moved the messages back to the 
labels where I wanted them.  HTH
