I haven't done it myself, but I know pretty savvy computer users who do
use POP and IMAP with their Gmail account at the same time. Actually, I
was doing this for a short time without knowing it, and everything
seemed to work. I too would be worried about potential side effects of
doing it this way though. It might be time to go to Google again.
