Thanks for the heads up. Gmail is set for both POP and IMAP on the server
settings when accessing it over the web. I have gotten used to POP on my
Outlook 2002 client (yeah, I'm really still using that version) and don't
want to convert it to IMAP because I like having the messages downloaded to
my Windows XP PC. I'll be careful with IMAP on my iPhone 5 and maybe I'll
change to IMAP on the computer at some point.

Hi Alan,

I can't say this for sure, but I would be careful if you use POP with your
gmail account on the computer and IMAP on the iPhone. I do remember that in
"Settings" on your gmail account you have to enable either POP or IMAP
depending on what you want to use and I'm not sure if it will work in a
mixed mode so to speak.

Which version of Windows and Outlook are you using? If it's Outlook 2007 or
2010 I don't see why you wouldn't use IMAP both on the computer and the
iPhone and this way your mail would always be in sync.

Sieghard

Subject: Settin Up Gmail Account as IMAP - first iPhone Connection

I've done a lot of reading on the best way to configure my email accounts on
my local computer and the iPhone. I'm pretty clear on the settings I need. I
use POP with Outlook on my desktop computer and plan to use IMAP on the
iPhone 5. My question has to do with what exactly will be downloaded to my
iPhone the first time I use it to check my gmail account. I save all my
email on the gmail servers with about 3.3GB of these messages archived in
the All Mail folder. The gmail server inbox contains just the messages not
yet downloaded to Outlook on my desktop computer.

I'm concerned that the first time I access gmail with my iPhone, all
messages including those archived will be downloaded from the servers to my
phone. Let me change that. I think with IMAP, the full message is not
actually downloaded but just the headers and subjects. I only want the
iPhone to get messages that are in the inbox, not all the archived messages.

Can anyone tell me if I need to configure my phone differently to get what I
want? Will setting it up as IMAP result in the headers for everything in my
gmail account being downloaded to my phone when I access it?

Thanks for any help.
