It used to be the case that you also got a deal on the product when it was released, like a discount or something for being a beta tester. As you can see, since so many people want to be beta testers, companies don't have to offer such incentives, and some companies even charge people to be beta testers.
A good beta tester and a good beta testing program do place some burdens on the beta tester. You have to keep details about the product you're beta testing confidential, and you're usually expected to provide feedback, both good and bad, so it's more than just an opportunity to get your hands on an app before everyone else.
