Since this thing supposedly comes from Hong Kong or something, don't you have to pay taxes or something when you receive it? If so, how much does this add to the price, and can you just go online and pay it somewhere? I think this could be a great accessory for scanning mail, if the area under it is big enough to get a regular lettter or something under it. I've been looking for something than the slow desktop scanner for awhile, but the specialized integrated camera solutions cost a lot.

Hi Sieghard,

I am sure you are right and that there are better lights to be had. However, to work with the StandScan, they would have to be a sort of strip light and flat so as to allow the box to fold flat. I know nothing about these things, but can only assure you that the difference between the 9 volt battery power output and the 12 volt mains output is dramatic. The former will, probably, work in most reasonable light situations, but the 12 volt output will allow the StandScan to work in all situations, regardless of the ambient lighting or accidental shadows. I would hate to see people disappointed after having trumpeted the usefulness of this accessory to the iphone and encouraging people to go ahead and spend cash on it. I don't know which batteries, other than that they are referred to as "Pencil" batteries. Indeed, I suspect I could use my Turbo Charger to the same effect, but it doesn't have the right sized adaptor. If you purchase the StandScan, perhaps, with your knowledge, you will be able to advise us in this regard? If I knew the names of these connectors, I could look for one to link my iPhone battery back-up to the StandScan and, perhaps, get my 12 volts without the need to purchase the extra battery case or the cost of buying more batteries.

I see we are still at the early stages with all this, but I can say that with the 12 volt output and the box itself, we do now have a solution which should work for everyone.

I am aware that I have been lucky using Prizmo et al, and that some people might have the idea that this box might not be so user friendly for them, especially if they have had bad experiences when trying to scan free-hand, so I will take my StandScan Pro round some friends houses and try them with it, just to reassure myself that using it is not skill based, but, in all honesty, I don't think it is!

I look forward to your future input re the lights etc, it is good to have so many different people with different professional backgrounds here on the list so that we can empower ourselves.

   Ciao for now,
   Sandy.

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for the suggestion, I have been following your mails about the
Standscan and how you said before that the lighting was better and brighter
if it was plugged in than with the 9 Volt battery.

I must say that to me that indicates a design flaw in some form or shape as there are so many awesome LED lights available these days which require very
little power. I sell Petzl headlamps at my store which run on 2 Triple A
batteries and put out 65 Lumins and while I am not an electronics guy to me it just doesn't make sense that these LED's can't be just as bright with a 9 Volt battery as they are with 12 Volts. Also, when they talk about "pencil" cells, I sure hope they are not those super expensive little batteries where
you end up spending $30 to buy the batteries for that 12 Volt battery
holder. I forgot to ask them last time which exact batteries are required,
if you know, maybe you could post the battery designation.

Thanks,
Sieghard

Subject: An important suggestion for anyone contemplating buying the
StandScan Pro!

Hi,

i am delighted to see people's interest in the StandScan Pro, however,
after having had one for a month now and experimenting with it, also,
comparing it with the ScanBox, I must say that the major difference between
the two is the potential power of the lighting that comes with each unit.
The ScanBox only has a 9 volt battery, whereas, the StandScan can be souped up to 12 volts by using either the mains cable with transformer or by using
the 12 volt battery case which you have to order as an add-on. I made a
mistake when I ordered my unit and didn't buy the extra battery case and so can only get 12 volts of lighting when plugged into the mains. I am going to order the 12 volt battery case today whichshould give me the extra umph that
I would need when on the go.

I cannot stress enough the importance of this extra power. Visually,
when you compare the 9 with the 12 volt lighting, the difference is dramatic
and only the 12 volt lighting will provide an absolutely reliable scan
regardless of all other factors. When the ambient lighting is good, you
could even use the box with no lights, of course, but as we are looking for
something that is going to render reliable results in all situations, we
definitely need the 12 volts.

So, for anyone considering buying the StandScan Pro, can I suggest that
you buy the extra backup battery holder that takes several pencil batteries,
I think you will find it worth the extra few bucks.

   Happy scanning, Sandy.
