Hello, Christopher.

I haven't played with GoogleMaps in a while, but when I first
downloded V. 1.0, I was struck by the unhelpful labels attached to
buttons. The button now labeled "views" in the latest version was
called "Layers entrypoints" in V. 1.0. The phrase "layers
entrypoints" meant nothing to me. The button turned out to be a way
to access satellite, traffic, and transit views. I recently showed
Google Maps to a sighted user, and he noted the cryptic little icons
next to buttons. In other words, the interface wasn't intuitive to
him. At any rate, I agree with you entirely when you say a product is
worth courting even if it is not workable out of the box.
