True, I did think the icon labels in Google Maps was particularly cryptic, but I frequently find a one word label for an icon to be mysterious, and I need to do a bit of exploring to figure out what each icon and button really leads to. Ditto for icons used by the sighted. When asking a sighted friend or relative what a particular icon does, I'll hear things like "it looks like a little flower" or "it's a square with an equals sign in the middle". Considering the different hurdles I face for accessibility the poor choice of a word or phrase for an icon label seems like a pretty minor accessibility issue.

Hello, Christopher.

I haven't played with GoogleMaps in a while, but when I first
downloded V. 1.0, I was struck by the unhelpful labels attached to
buttons. The button now labeled "views" in the latest version was
called "Layers entrypoints" in V. 1.0. The phrase "layers
entrypoints" meant nothing to me. The button turned out to be a way
to access satellite, traffic, and transit views. I recently showed
Google Maps to a sighted user, and he noted the cryptic little icons
next to buttons. In other words, the interface wasn't intuitive to
him. At any rate, I agree with you entirely when you say a product is
worth courting even if it is not workable out of the box.

I'm curious why you refer to Google Map's questionable accessibility
record. I haven't used it in a while, so I can't answer your question,
but I downloaded it when it first came out, and I didn't have a problem
with it's accessibility, so although something may have changed
recently, it's been accessible since the get go. Also, the reason to
keep trying it is because it may end up being a superior product. The
iPhone itself wasn't accessible when it first came out but people didn't
give up on it.

Greetings to the list.

I don't know why I bother playing with Google Maps considering its
questionable accessibility record, but I'm still curious about making
this app work. When I upgraded to V. 1.16, I noticed the "Action
Results" button seems to have been removed. I cannot figure out how
to make the app speak voice-guided turn-by-turn instructions. I can
plug in a starting point and a destination address, and I can call up
a map if I press the "Paging Footer" button; but I can't enable
voice-guided instructions. Any thoughts, please?

BTW, "Action Results" and "Paging Footer" are cryptic labels to say the
least.
