Hi Sandy, The way you described the location what is on the iPhone screen indicates that you are in video mode. The "flash It" button will toggle on/off the apps flash on the camera. There are times that I need additional light. The amount of distance,that one needs from the object will vary depending on the size of the object that you want Talking Goggles to read. For example, when using the app with my computer screen, I was about 2-3 inches away. Also, I treaT Talking Goggles as an OCR app in regards of keeping the iPhone levvel and centering it over the object that I want it to read. I believe that good lighting is essential, so there is less of a chance of the app crashing. HTH.
