Do you want double tapping on the keyboard or not? You can have either. Just when in an edit field use the rotor to go to typing mode then swipe up or down to choose either touch typing or standard typing. Standard typing will mean you do need to either double tap or do a split finger tap, touch typing means once you find the key you want you just release your finger. You may also find the function to be able to use shortcuts to input words helpful. Letters or buttons. And use a different thumb/finger to tap anywhere on screen. Keep the letter finding finger on that letter though. Hope it works.
