Sieghard ,

What has been your experience with regard to your IOS devices when using Outlook.com? Since Google stopped supporting exchange on free accounts, I'm having a heck of a time keeping my Outlook contacts in sync with my iDevices. They sync with iCloud, but not with Outlook like they used to. Any thoughts?

Best,

HI Raul,

You might just be correct about using exchange for gmail. I used to have my
gmail account set up as an exchange account, but for some time now kept
getting a message "Connection to the Server Failed". I had removed my
account since I am not really using it anyways, but on the last Today in iOS
episode a caller asked for instruction on how to sync his Google contacts as
well. One caller had provided instructions on how to set it up as a CardDAV
account, but another caller called in and explained that one could set it up
as an Exchange account and provided the settings, m.google.com for the
server and google.com for the domain. Then of course your gmail email and
password. So I just tried to set up my account again using those settings
and while the account was created without a hitch, once I opened Mail and
went into my gmail Inbox I received the same "Connection to the Server
Failed" message. I guess this is another good reason why it is much simpler
to use Outlook.com. I consider Exchange and Exchange Active Sync to be much
better than IMAP which only does mail.

Sieghard

Hi, I didn't think that Google was accepting new Exchange accounts, thus
the need to use CardDav.

You can also set up your gmail account as an exchange account and then it
will sync all of it, email, calendar and contacts.

Use m.google.com as the server and google.com as the domain.

You need to use CardDav and not CalDav to sync your Google Contacts. I
suspect this is just a typo.

I'm not sure what's going on with your phone, I just followed the
instructions I got on the web and it just worked.

To set your default Contacts go into Settings -> Mail, Contacts,
Calendars and jump down to the Contacts heading. Double tapping on the
default account button will let you change it.

I didn't have to specify that contacts is the service I want to use. I'm
assuming that's because the CardDav protocol is being used.

Make sure you give the account a recognizable name so you won't get it
confused with your Google IMAP account in the Settings -> Mail,
Contacts, Calendars page.

For example, I see

Google, Mail, Calendar, Notes
Google, Contacts

Note, I called both accounts Google, so I didn't follow my advice from
above. The "Google, Contacts" is the CardDav account I added to sync my
Google Contacts.

Hi, I went googling and found out that i can sync my goglecontacts
through caldav. I followed the steps and added the account but now still
dont see the option to make this the standard contacts account and also
contacts are not selected as the items that are synced with htis
account. I logged into the google website but did not get any messages
there as if i should ahthorize it.
What might i be doing wrong?
