Does anyone know if you are looking a menu how to see all of the menu, I
can read the first screen of let's say, Olive Garden but that lists a few
appetizers and I can't seem to continue past what is on that screen.

I also would prefer list views.

I have only downloaded the app and taken a cursory look but can't figure out
why a barbershop is under restaurants, it would be nice to see that when I
am looking for it but, not when I am trying to read a restaurant menu.

Talking Menus & More

Hi Cara,

Thank you for the reminder. I recently participated in evaluating 2 apps
created by graduating software engineers at McGill University. Both groups
of students had chosen to create apps that were VO accessible. We have to
understand that there are a lot of people out there wanting to work for us.

After the first evaluation I pointed out to them the same points you so
brilliantly described, especially our need to have things open in different
views. Within 3 weeks, both groups came back with apps that were completely
VO accessible. Since the developers of this app are among us, let's
continue to point out things that are wrong but making sure to give our
messages a friendly tone.

Hi All,

I'd like to ask that we keep our critiques of this app positive so that the
developer can benefit from our knowledge and experience here, rather than
chastising him for taking the app's interface in a direction that may not be
as beneficial for us as we'd like.

there are some great insights we can offer here and this can open up a
really good discussion worthy of referencing again and again if we can focus
the ideas and needs we have in positive statements that can help Todd refine
this app to work more smoothly for us as Voiceover users.

I'll start:

Todd, as some have said here already, a really good way of delivering data
to a VO user is to allow a double tap on the item one desires to obtain more
info about. Yes, you've done this to a degree, but you might take this
further in that double tapping the restaurant name actually brings up a new
view with only that restaurant's data in it. I.E. Perhaps the Map, phone and
menu buttons are the only thing now visible in the view. -Or, you might have
the map visible (so no need for a map button) and just have the button to
call the restaurant and a button to show the menu.

Once the user double taps the menu button, a new view will again open, which
contains only the menu categories, which the user might finally double tap
to access the actual menu items themselves, for that particular category.
Does this make sense?

This is only one approach but it is very helpful to a VO user to have these
data separated out into discreet views whereas now, when a VO user brings up
a menu, not only is the menu shown, but also the other restaurants in the
list, which makes for a less than optimal user experience for someone using
Voiceover. Does this help?

Just for a reference, a double-tap with Voiceover running is equivalent to a
single tap with VO turned off.

If you'd like more advice about how VO works and good accessibility
practices for iOS feel free to email me privately as well as check out
Apple's Accessibility programming guide and UIAccessibility Protocol

As I said above, my approach is certainly not the only one and others here
have some very good insights to offer. Let's start a good forward-thinking
discussion on this! K?

Thanks to all of us for this!

Smiles,

Cara :)

For an app that was supposed to be designed for the visually impaired, this
app leaves a lot to be desired. First, it is graphic based. There are only
four choices on each screen so you'll need to scroll through multiple pages
to find information. It would have been better if they had just used lists.

Also in my area, the restaurant list I have dry cleaner's, nail salons,
carpet cleaners, and frat houses, plus an A&W that has been closed for at
least five years.

The menus I could bring up seemed to have fewer selections than the actual
menus.

I do not see myself using this app. It certainly is no where near the app I
was hoping for.

I removed it from my phone.

I don't know if this helps, but what I did is I tapped on the restaurant I
wanted, and then there is a menu button. I hit that and there was the menu

Hello Todd:

I was having a similar problem in Calgary Alberta Canada. I wonder if it is
an issue with something we are doing at our end not bringing the menus up.
The usual way we would do it would be to double tap on the name of the
restaurant and presumably, the menu would appear.

Richard and Fred,

I just changed my location, virtually, to Portland, Oregon and also
Portland, Maine and found lots of restaurants with menus.

In fact, almost 100% of the Portland, Oregon restaurants have menus. Here
are more than a dozen that show up on the first screen and they all have
menus.

Daily Grill, Park Bistro, Starbucks, Eurotrash, Ben & Jerry's, Veggie Grill,
Restaurant Service, Saint Cupcake, McDonalds, The Melting Pot, The Morning
Star Cafe, Little Big Burger,

Blitz Pearl, Seattle's Best Coffee, Higgins Restaurant & Bar, etc.

For Portland, Maine, it was probably 50% of the restaurants on the initial
screen that have menus. By providing info for all of the restaurants, you
at least get access to their website (which may have a menu), phone,
directions, twitter, etc. But the goal is to get every restaurant's menu
online.

Can you provide me, by email to [email protected] the names of some
restaurants that don't have menus? Maybe there is a usability change we
need to make, so the menus show up better... because in many cases, they are
there. Over a million of them in fact. And if you find a restaurant that
doesn't have their menu in the app, we would love your help in asking them
to be included. It's free for the restaurants, too, to have their menu in
the database. This is really a community effort with little downside. Our
database provider can even 'scrape' their website to import the menu!

Thanks!
