I think it depends on if you plan on selling your iPhone after your contract is up with your provider. iPhones that are in fantastic condition bring more money then ones all beat to hell. I use a case, when I first got mine I had a case where it sort of sat inside, it was the case for an older iPhone but I could clip it to a pocket. I bought an Otterbox and have never looked back. I have had at least two times when I dropped the phone, once I was in the hospital and it got pushed off a table that was high; by an aide who thought it was cool to reorganize everything on my husband's table when he was having a procedure done. Recently I got tangled up in cables and pulled it off the desk, it landed on my foot, but I am glad I have that protection and a lot of my coworkers ask me where I got the case.
