I use a case, when I first got mine I had a case where it sort of sat inside, it was the case for an older iPhone but I could clip it to a pocket. I bought an Otterbox and have never looked back. I have had at least two times when I dropped the phone, once I was in the hospital and it got pushed off a table that was high; by an aide who thought it was cool to reorganize everything on my husband's table when he was having a procedure done. Recently I got tangled up in cables and pulled it off the desk, it landed on my foot, but I am glad I have that protection and a lot of my coworkers ask me where I got the case.
