Hi Larry,
I have the StandScan pro, plus 12 volt battery holder, and find it folds
and unfolds easily. i don't actually see the likelihood of the box suffering
too much over a reasonable period of time, even with repeated use. However, in
the earlier versions, there was a problem with regard to the connector between
the lights and the cable. I had to have a replacement box due to this. Harry,
from StandScan, tells me that they have improved this aspect, meanwhile, I put
some adheasive tape over that weak area, just to prevent any future problems. I
have taken my StandScan Pro with me to demonstrate it to various people and
have experienced no problems at all. I can only say that when I show it to
other VO users, they are wowed! The cheapness, the lightness, the portability
and the ease of assembly (once you are used to it) all mean that you do have a
realistic scanning facility alongside your phone.
At the moment, different apps have different strengths, so I would suggest
that it is best to have both Text Grabber and Prizmo onboard, in this way you
can be fairly sure of good results.
I was attempting to get some results from a glossy magazine, yesterday. I
found that Text Grabber did much better than Prizmo, using the StandScan Pro,
plus 12 volts lighting, I think the reason that prizmo didn't do so well was
that, no matter what I did, the flash kept being enabled with Prizmo, this
meant that too much glare was the result. Indeed, I am wondering if anyone else
here, who uses prizmo, under its latest guise, has found a way to turn the
flash off?
So, if you are thinking of buying one of these boxes, please consider the
StandScan Pro, plus 12 volt battery holder, yu will find it much more reliable
than the ScanBox, which only has 9 volts (unless they have changed things since
I got a chance to try it out).
Sandy.
