I have awareness, and it does work very well with wired headsets.

Awareness the headphone app by Essency allows you to hear what is being fed over the earphones and also the sounds in your environment. both are fed through the earphones. this app is 6 or 7 dollars. Another one that does a similar thing is Listen Upby Neil Norman. This one is 1 dollar. both require a wired set of earpones and work with the mike on the earphones not the built-in mikes on the phone itself. At least that is what it looks like from the description. Have fun.
